Training Classes

Here, at Central Essex, we have a number of classes to help you and your dog get the most from each other.

Please note: Only members can be in control of dogs within the hall (due to the terms of our insurance), so you must be a member before bringing a dog to club. See Prices and Availability for more information.

Ringcraft (7.00pm - 7.45pm Main Hall) Whether you are a beginner with your first show dog or an experienced exhibitor, our experienced team of instructors will help you get the best from your dog in the show ring. You will be taught how to present and move your dog correctly for its breed. We offer practical advice on all aspects of Dog Showing from how to enter your first show to where to find the right show lead. Many of our members go on to compete at Crufts. Puppies are welcome as soon as they have cleared their final vaccinations and there is no upper age limit. There is an internal competition each year to find the club's best handler.

Obedience. There are six Obedience classes, including the 'Intake' class. There is a twice yearly internal competition.

Intake Class (8.00pm - 9.00pm Small Hall) For new members or existing members with young dogs. Puppies are welcome once they have cleared their final vaccinations and there is no upper age limit. This is a basic introduction to the club and to obedience work for you and your dog. It takes the form of a four week course where you and your dog will learn basic commands - 'Sit', 'Heel', 'Down', 'Stay', 'Wait', 'Come', etc. At the end of the four week introduction handler and dog will join the Starters class.

Starters (7.15pm - 7.50pm Small Hall) This class extends and builds on the training in the Intake class: improving heelwork and increasing the length of stays. The instruction in this class is based on 'fun' for both the dog and the handler; getting the dog to enjoy being with you and wanting to please you.

Class 1 (7.45pm - 8.20pm Main Hall) Class 1 builds on the good work from the Starters class, adding a little polish. Again the class uses 'fun' methods to motivate you and your dog.

Class 2 (8.20pm - 9.00pm Main Hall) Building on Class 1 and the Starters class. This class introduces recalls and stays off the lead.

Class 3 (9.00pm - 9.40pm Main Hall) The class introduces retrieve, heel off lead and stays 'out of sight' as in Obedience competitions.

Class 4 (9.45pm - 10.30pm Main Hall) The 'top' class introduces 'send away' and 'scent' and aims to polish and improve everything learnt so far. Mainly, but not exclusively, for those handlers who wish to take part in outside competition events. Also for advanced handlers who enjoy training to a high standard and who wish to improve their own training and handling skills.
