Teach yourself dog training
Various - in association with APDT - teach yourself

This little covers a wide range of topics from buying a puppy to use of training equipment, from socialising to clicker training.

This book has been written by 14 well respected members of the APDT. The book helps you to understand what is required when you try to teach your dog. There are excellent chapters on socialisation and how to deal with common problems like jumping up or barking

This is an excellent little book with lots of hints and tips that will be of use to all dog owners and at under £9 I think that this is one book all dog owners should have on their book shelf!

How to Speak Dog
Stanley Coren - Fireside

Unfortunately this book doesn't "Do exactly what it says on the tin". You won't be able to have an in-depth conversation with your dog by reading this book, however it does tell you what your dog is "saying" to you and other dogs. There are some really good diagrams showing that your dog is saying from his posture and facial expressions. The last chapter does go some way to explain how to communicate with your dog in "doggerel". There is also a good dog phrase book!

Not quite a dog language course but a good introduction into how dogs communicate with each other and with other animals (including us!).

Dominance Fact or Fiction by Barry Eaton

Dominance: Fact or Fiction
Barry Eaton - Reedprint

This is an interesting little booklet that explains the latest thinking regarding the origin of dogs, their status within the human "pack" and the usefulness of rank reduction programmes
Barry Eaton says that "Dogs are not wolves", but also explains that the wolf pack is more like a family that a dominance power struggle. He dispels the notion that your dog want' rule your house (or even the world!) .

An interesting read that uses the most up-to-date research into the origins of the dog and their behaviour
